Viking: Character Design Challenge 2016

Just finished for a Viking character design contest on Facebook in this group.
(To go directly to the post and give a like/comment/share, go here).
Also, if you aren’t doing so already, be sure to follow my art page on there. JG Art on FB

Fun and relatively quick piece to put together.
The concept on this one was a Viking protector, and his young charge. The girl is the future queen, and as such, is both a child, and still armed and willing to fight.
Micron line work, with acrylic paint on watercolor paper.

Have a few different things in the works at the moment, so will be updating sporadically with new things. Check back soon.

This year for the NYCC I was asked to work for the company Fanboy Collectibles (booth 2314). The owner, Troy Emmi, was also nice enough to let me put my portfolio up on the counter, with business cards, and prints for sale. Fortunately, I was able to not only work hard making money for his company, but also was able to sell a number of prints to make some extra money for myself.

Here are the two images that were available for sale at the convention. If interested in one, I do have a few of each print left over, send an email and we can work it out.

Batman looks out over Gotham city from his perch, the gargoyles of the building as his only company. Went with a bit more of a cartoonish looking goofy Batman. Reasons being that first and foremost, I’ve been in need of some playful artwork recently after a number of intensive images for various projects, and secondly, because I have another idea for a Batman piece, which will be very dark in nature and creation, so an opposing image type is a benefit to create first.

Not only did I want to try a different approach to my image making process for this one, but I also wanted a detailed, but joyous looking character(s), hopefully I’ve been successful in this approach. Would like to think so, as this is the image that sold most at the NYCC

Recently added two new pieces to the Mine.Mind series, which is an ongoing series of small works that I’ve been working on for a while now. Anyway, here’s two more from it. Hope you enjoy the glimpse.

Also, for those not familiar with Mine.Mind, here’s a link to the rest of those works. Mine.Mind Series

Created this piece on Friday for a small local art contest at Williamsburg Artist and Craftsman Supply. The winner gets a nice new easel to take home with them, something I would definitely like to have as my pieces are starting to get bigger and leaning them against things in my house is getting tricky. So, to anyone who’d like to help out in that department, all you have to do is like the image on facebook in the competition page. Link is Here.

Also, if you havent already, would appreciate any and all likes/follows on my FB art page, James Groeling Art

Thanks all. More updates coming soon.

I’m back! I’ve been a bit busy with work for a while and havent been around. A couple trips to Texas in the past two months (Houston and Austin) for art installations, and a number of commissions back to back.
The commissions I’ll upload as soon as I get the okay from the clients to do so. Also working on new JDGAFs and a comic for an art collection book of stories, as well as some paintings, small and large, and a number of ink drawings. The ink drawings I can share here now, because I feel like you may be going through some art withdrawals by your favorite JG.

So, be sure to scope out these new pieces, and keep an eye out for a week of various intermittent uploads.

Back in March I had made a bunch of small little drawing/paintings for a show, using wood scraps from a studio I work at. Recently re-found a few dozen of the pre-cut panels and decided to start playing with them. Currently have 6 drawn out, 2 of which I finished up the painting work on.

Going to put stands on the back of these so they’ll be ready for display on a shelf or desk. Still need to put a sealant on them, and sign the backs. Then I’ll be selling them through my Etsy store along with many other things I have up there.

The wooden pieces these are on vary a little in size as they came from scraps (recycle and reuse), but are mostly around 4.5″ tall by 2.75″ wide, at about 1/2″ thick wood.

Got around to scanning a few more of the yearly planner art I have. Theres a bunch of other pieces in there that still need slight color washes before they’ll be ready to scan. Hopefully get to those soon, but have a bit of other things going at the moment.

For now, here’s the new scans, as well as an updated section in the Drawing page for them. Goal of 2014, organize and redesign the site/pages for easier access and displaying of what I do. Drawing page now.

New Neighbor Storyline – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Back to some JDGAF after too long of not being around to edit and upload. Have a few more in the wings, havent decided if I want to mass upload and finish the storyline on this segment of it, or just set up to auto-upload. Probably the second one as it will get the comic in a cycle of being uploaded regularly… now I just need to figure out how to do so,….

Should have another painting/flyer up for you soon, as well as some sketchbook pieces I’ll be working on as full sized illustrations over the next month. See you soon.

It has been a very long time since I’ve done any digital work. Mostly because I really just love the feeling or working with traditional media. However, I’ve realized that it can be very helpful in planning out larger pieces by doing some quick mock ups, as well as with some practice, I’m sure I can make some really fun digital paintings.

So far I’ve been working with GIMP, which is basically a free version of Photoshop. It works fine for what I’m doing, as is pretty straight forward as a learning tool on how to get things going.

The first one I started working with recently was based on a few sketches I’d done of a prospective t-shirt design I’d like to have printed up.

Here are the rough sketches in my sketchbook.

RockNRoll_BadASStronautSketch1   astronaut2

and then I did a very light rough sketch in pencil, scanned it and started making this.

Astronaut_sketch_1

As you can see the image is still pretty roughly done. I’ve got some more work to do with the background design, and then line revision and sharpening details before I can have it color separated and sent to a printer.

The second one I’ve recently been working on is a character concept, the base idea was roughed out (again, in the sketchbooks), with an idea for the face and pose. Then scanned, and worked on. Background is still being sketched out.

While I was playing with it, I was also occasionally flipping it, and realized I currently like it facing the opposite way. Head blown up as a second layer for detail viewing at the moment. I will be sketching more like this over the next couple months, as I really want to do more concept art work, and it seems that the digital route is preferred in that field. Also, now that I have a functional tablet again, I can actually do the detail work.

Of these two drawings, the astronaut will end up being finished as a tshirt design, going to do more revisions to get a really cool look to it. And the character concept I may end up attempting as a digital painting in the future. Will see how it looks when I finish detailing it.

Another one recently added to the little black book. New Years Eve, means different things to different people.

NewYear2013

More things soon, just currently in the process of finishing a lot of projects at once. Yay for work, although it means delays on updates.
