In preparation for the Cedar Beach music and arts festival (long island, NY), I was asked by Parkside Fuel/Greenseal Weatherization to create a painting on one of their older oil tanks, from an image of their offices during a snowstorm.  So, in the interest of sharing some progress work with you. Here’s how it starts.

Client asks me if I can do something, I say yes. I do it, something goes wrong, I fix it, make it work.

So when they gave me a white tank to start on, I realized two things. first, it was rusting through the paint. two, it wasnt well primed. Picked up a coat of Rustoleum primer, problem solved, materials added to list.

Paint wasnt sticking as well to that surface as I’d hoped, so had to double up on coats for even the non dense patches. Solution, I’d have to really crank into this thing to finish it for the event. Here’s some pics. (click for larger version) Oh, and I was working on location in a corner of their graveled parking lot.

On its back, getting painting

standing, very rough start  coming together  top down look  Night, finishing up

In order to finish it, the last day I was there from about 7am-9pm. When I have a deadline, I do everything I can to make sure it gets finished for the client.

The next day, I arrived at the event to see the tank in daylight, Although there was one change, the sealant coat I used must have picked up some dust during the night, because there was a thin coat of white at the top area. It worked out well though as it added to the snow cloud effect. What artists like to call, a “Happy Accident”.

At the event

The client was really happy with how it turned out, people at the event stopped to look, and get information on the artist (this guy), and was a lot of fun. Also they hired me to do face painting at the event, which is normally not what I’d be doing, but the kids were great and I had a lot of fun making them look like butterflies, puppies, tigers, zombies, and various other things.

Overall, great experience, and they already mentioned they want me to do more work for them.

JDGAF NEWS:

I’ve decided to start updating JDGAF regularly on Tuesdays, and by Tuesday I mean I’m going to set the upload date to automatically post the newest version of the comic at 12:30am EST on Tuesday Mornings. Depending on how well the feedback continues with that, as well as how the flow starts to feel once I get it moving, I may eventually start updating Tuesdays and Thursdays.  For now though, just check back after the listed time for your weekly dose of JDGAF.

Also, I have set up JDGAF pages on Facebook and Twitter, so if you are on those, please pop over and like/follow for updates. Also currently working on a separate webpage for the comics, and whatever other artwork that comes containing the characters who fill the world of JDGAF. I’m having fun creating them and want to have more webcomic fans have easier access to read them when they come. So as that develops will keep you updated.

Check back after 4 hours for your next dose of JDGAF.

The sign gigs have been going pretty so far. The more I work within the constraints of a limited set of colors and a black background, the more I realize i can just have some fun and create different looks. That might be part of why I’ve gotten a few call-backs to places to expand their sign selections already. Here are a few new ones for your enjoyment.

O’Hanlon’s on 14th street (just west of 1st Ave)

Pretty similar layouts with different art thrown into the mix. Also had a brand new, never before used board to play on which was pretty fun.  Set the opening standards high.

Exchange Bar & Grill on 3rd Ave between 20th and 21st streets.

Was asked to come in and do signs for their weekend brunch menu, and played around a little more with different looks. Although I have realized that the chalkboard pens I use are definitely going to be needing replacements already.

It’s been fun so far, although I still havent really started handing out cards at all the bars yet, mostly because I’m still figuring out what’s an appropriate price range for work and materials, and second because I’ve been out of town working on some projects so haven’t been local.

Will most likely have at least one new JDGAF comic up for you guys by next Monday, and another two by the end of next week. This traveling for work bit and lacking a portable computer are slowing down my updates. Going to have to correct that soon.

Was recently asked by one of the businesses I’d done work for, to come back and do more of their signs.
Pretty much given free reign on what will work for their present look, and be legible, so this is what I created for them. Simple stuff to show off their draft menu. The smaller boards I just redid the lettering, the bigger boards I got to play with a little more.

Nothing mindblowing here, just simple ideas that make the boards more interesting and eye catching than simple lettering.
Hopefully more business along these lines coming up in the near future.
